We don’t call the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, “Civil Rights Leaders Day,” so until an act of Congress declares today’s federally recognized holiday (known as Washington’s Birthday,) Presidents Day (or President’s Day or Presidents’ Day – no one can agree), I refuse to do so.
George Washington was the man.
My favorite anecdote is that when the British finally surrendered and we Americans gained our independence, everyone turned to ‘ol George and cried out for him to be King. He declined. When King George III found out that Washington planned on returning to his farm the King replied, “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”
Today is George Washington Day.
