The Academy Awards happened recently; a night where most of the country gathers around their TVs to celebrate the one thing we all have in common: a love for the movies.
However, for as much as I pride myself in film knowledge, the famous Oscar montages tend to inform me as to how few of Hollywood’s greatest pictures I’ve actually seen.
This led me to a challenge; an attempt to tackle 100 of the greatest films of all time.
Every 10 years the American Film Institute revises what they assert to be the list of the top 100 films ever made. Here it is: 100 Years 100 Movies 10th Anniversary Edition.

While the list is certainly debatable, it’s safe to say these film scholars knew what they were doing when they compiled the rankings.
So I made a commitment: I will watch all 100 of these movies; starting at #100 and ending with #1. After each of them, I will let you know what I think (without giving away any spoilers). Each film will receive a Grade (A+, A, A-, B+, etc.). Obviously, I acknowledge that these films have made the list for a reason, objectively they are all A or A+ movies. But to give you a better impression of which on the list are the true standouts, I will try to designate my own judgement system. Then I’ll go on to what I thought was great/poor about the film. Some films may also be evaluated on how they advance the theme of liberty, using the Liberty Scale (1-10).
The important part is YOU! If you think you’re game, take the AFI 100 Movie Challenge along with me. Make a commitment to watch each and every film on the list and that way, when you think my opinion of a film is idiotic, malformed, or misunderstood, you’ll be able to tell me why! (And hopefully you’ll agree with me some too).
I have lived in LA studying film for several years; but when it comes to these movies, I don’t want you to just take my word for it. That’s why I’m challenging you to watch along with me! Think of the enlightenment, the joy, and the intelligent conversations you’ll be able to have. Let’s become movie experts, together!
We start with #100: Ben-Hur. Are you ready?
